RC Enerson will get another chance at an NTT IndyCar Series ride when he drives for Carlin in this weekend’s Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Enerson will drive the team’s No. 31 Chevrolet, bringing sponsorship from the Lucas Oil School where he is an instructor. Enerson tested with the team in February at Circuit of The Americas.
Enerson knows the Mid-Ohio circuit well, having won an Indy Lights race there from the pole in 2015. He made the second of his three NTT IndyCar Series starts there in 2016 for Dale Coyne Racing, finishing 19th.
“RC really impressed us at Spring Training at COTA at the beginning of the season, and we were very hopeful that something could come together at some point that would put him back in the car,” team principal Trevor Carlin said. “RC has spent a lot of time with our team this season, and he has quite a bit of experience at Mid-Ohio, including an IndyCar start a few years back, so he should be able to jump back in and make the transition a smooth one.”
Enerson, 22, made three NTT IndyCar Series starts in ’16 for Dale Coyne’s team, completing all but two of the 235 road course laps. He qualified 11th and finished ninth in the race at Watkins Glen International.
“We’ve been working really hard to get something together to get me back in the seat at some point this season, and I couldn’t be happier that it’s all come together for Mid-Ohio,” Enerson said. “Mid-Ohio has always been one of my favorite tracks on the schedule. I’ve just always loved the elevation changes and all of the high-speed flowing corners.”
Enerson made 24 starts in Indy Lights over two seasons, all with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. He finished fourth in the point standings in his only full season (2015).
The NTT IndyCar Series action at Mid-Ohio action begins Friday with a pair of practices, the first at 11:20 a.m. The second is at 3:15 p.m.
Practice and qualifying will be held Saturday with the 90-lap race Sunday at 4 p.m. on NBC and the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network. SiriusXM Radio will carry the race on Channel 209.
